Composite Fillings & Tooth Bonding
Most people have fillings of one sort or another but today, because we are much more conscious of our smile, we can choose a natural looking alternative – the composite or tooth-coloured filling.
Bonded composite resins, or tooth-coloured filling materials, now provide excellent durability and resistance to fracture in small- to mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stresses of biting and chewing. They can be used on either front or back teeth and in the above circumstances are a great choice for people who prefer that their fillings look more natural.
In today’s more aesthetically aware society, tooth-coloured fillings are now used, where indicated, almost routinely as opposed to the less attractive amalgam or gold fillings.
Prevention is of course better than cure and the best dental filling is of course no dental filling, but when tooth restoration is necessary today, in many situations, they do on balance offer the best all round option.
Composite fillings are very a fragile material and sensitive to dental techniques and usually take longer to complete to a high standard than metal fillings. It’s important that we keep the tooth clean and dry while the cavity is restored with the bonded composite filling.
Where clients have a history of tooth grinding or frequently break large fillings, laboratory made ceramic fillings or bonded crowns may be a more durable option.
If you’re concerned about frequent breakages or the appearance of your teeth, as always, we’re happy to advise our clients on the particular aesthetic options best suited to their individual needs.
