Teeth Whitening in Brighton & Hove
Everybody wants a beautiful white smile, but as viewers of the BBC’s consumer protection programmes will be aware, there’s a lot of confusing and downright misleading information from illegal tooth whitening product suppliers and ‘technicians’ available via their advertisements on the internet.
We’ve put together some information here to advise and guide our Brighton and Hove clients about how SmileWorks provides truly professional advice and thoroughly medically researched and safe tooth bleaching options.
Your Safety and Professional Teeth Whitening.
The Cosmetic Products (Safety) Amendment) Regulations 2012 implementing European Directive 2011/84 came into force on 31 October 2012. This has enshrined in law that only dentists may be supplied with and prescribe up to 6% hydrogen peroxide for their patients for take home use after a thorough dental examination and instruction on the safe use of the necessary products.
Oral Products containing or releasing no more than 0.1 % hydrogen peroxide may be sold and remain freely available over the counter to consumers. These include mouth rinses, tooth pastes and tooth bleaching products.
However, tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry and only registered dentists and their suitably trained teams, following a dentist’s prescription, may take impressions and undertake tooth whitening.
Your dentist will first carry out a detailed consultation and evaluation to see that you are suitable for tooth whitening treatment and ensure that your tooth whitening is performed safely under their direct supervision.
The necessary products may only be sold to dentists. Our advice is that the most effective whitening treatment for home use contains 10% carbamide peroxide. This is equivalent to around 3% hydrogen peroxide. Most of the research has been conducted using 10% carbamide peroxide and has shown over the past 20 years of research and scientific publications to be safe predictable and effective for home tooth whitening treatment.
Unfortunately, the latest government legislation means that no tooth whitening treatment is now legally routinely available for under 18’s. For our young clients who have severe discolouration such as from fluorosis or tetracycline staining, where we consider treatment is in the patient’s best interests, we will, as always, do our very best to advise and help.
TEETH WHITENING FAQs
How will Brighton’s SmileWorks whiten my teeth?
At SmileWorks we select the best system available for each individual client.
We preferably use the Enlighten Evolution 3 tooth whitening system. This is the only tooth whitening system in the world to guarantee the whitest natural tooth colour (VITA shade B1) on every client irrespective of their starting tooth shade.
In the SmileWorks clinic we use a temperature stabilised 6% Hydrogen Peroxide gel, which fully complies with the latest UK and EU legislation, after our clients have completed our home whitening protocol for 14 nights.
The Evolution 3 combines near zero sensitivity with the predictability that the Evolution system has always been known for. There are no unnecessary lights or ‘Lasers’. That means no tooth dehydration giving a false, short lasting whitening effect; and no time consuming gum protection is required.
For clients who prefer to wear their tooth bleaching trays during the daytime, we have introduced Enlighten’s temperature stabilised EvoDay, the world’s first predictable day whitening system.
Why is EvoDay different to other day whitening systems?
Hydrogen Peroxide gels are much more unstable than Carbamide Peroxide. This is one of the main reasons that day whitening systems are so unpredictable. Our whitening gels are kept cold continuously, from manufacture until delivery from us to our SmileWorks clients. This makes them neutral at use and consistently batch stable, resulting in predictable performance and results.
What is the concentration?
6% hydrogen peroxide – temperature stabilised –pH neutral
How do I use my tooth whitening gel?
You will receive your own specially customized whitening trays and individually tailored instructions. Clients should anticipate 2 week’s daytime tray whitening – minimum 1 hour per day – maximum 3 hours.
Why are SmileWorks whitening trays better?
Outstanding quality control from the UKs best dental laboratory ensures that your super high pressure vacuum formed bleaching trays are not the weak link in the tooth whitening system.
Is it safe?
YES. The Enlighten gel formula will not harm the enamel on your teeth and will not affect your existing fillings. The Enlighten product is based on the development of a formulation that is being safely and effectively used in over 5,000 dental clinics across the world.
Am I a good candidate for tooth whitening?
Were your teeth whiter when you were younger, but are yellow now? Are your front teeth healthy, without bonded veneers or crowns? If the answer is “yes” to these questions, you are an excellent candidate for whiter teeth.
How white will my teeth get?
The Enlighten tooth whitening system has shown it can whiten teeth by up to 10 shades and Evolution 3 guarantees VITA shade B1. Enlighten can brighten your teeth dramatically, but not everyone’s teeth respond in the same way. Results will vary in each individual client due to factors such as tooth density, tooth porosity, and lifestyle habits. Your dentist will advise you fully after your tooth whitening evaluation. Most people will brighten their teeth substantially with one treatment.
How long should my whitening last?
Your Enlighten smile can last up to 3 years. However, everyone’s habits and lifestyles vary and the use of tobacco, regular drinking red wine, coffee, or tea will affect how long your results will last. Frequent visits to your hygienist for professional cleaning will help maintain the results. On your dentist’s further prescription we can dispense additional gel to maintain your new whiter smile!
